Inspired by the serene and majestic California coastline, the design of this full-home renovation and addition incorporates natural materials and neutral tones. The home was designed to adapt to a growing family while remaining timeless in its sensibilities. Moving library walls and other operable openings provide flexibility and configurability. The design seeks to capitalize on the temperate weather by maximizing openings and continuing surfaces from inside out like a kitchen counter that extends out to the deck.

…modernising its previously introverted, compartmentalised interiors to accommodate a growing family, new realities of working from home, and a flair for entertaining. A strategy of openness & adaptability emerged.

COASTAL INSPIRATION

Inspired by the moody California coastline on a foggy day, this kitchen features a patinized bronze backsplash and custom hanging shelves against a palette of cork flooring, walnut casework with metal mesh infill, and matte black & satin bronze accents.

Designed to accommodate a growing family, entertaining, and easy accessibility to the outdoors, the home employs a series of large flexible doors, windows, and walls throughout.

The brick chimney, a charming relic from the original structure, rises from this scene, covered in vines. It feels like a fitting metaphor for this shapeshifting, serene renovation, which so comfortably blends old and new, the angular and soft, and the rigid and ever-changing.
