Painter’s Studio

With a vision to transform a century-old factory building, Atelier Cho Thompson worked closely with a MacArthur Genius-winning painter to create a bright, functional, and beautiful studio space. With a clear parti and an elegantly simple plan, the convoluted layout was transformed into a series of galleries and workspaces, each with a different lighting and material tectonic condition. These varied conditions, from white walls to raw plywood, from skylights to north-facing steel windows, were created to give the artist a range of spaces in which to test out new ideas across a variety of media. Careful coordination was required to design spaces free of overhead ducts and utilities, yielding pure, unadorned spaces. The original building, in poor condition, was preserved, and key elements, including its brick facade and steel stair, were restored and highlighted as part of the new project.
